A springy component for use in a recess in the heel zone of a moulded sports shoe sole is made of a dense elastic matl. and shaped to provide mechanically damped elastic deformation. Pref.the component is of rubber in the form of a diabolo, i.e. a pair of shallow truncated cones joined by their narrow faces. Pref. the hub of the profile is perforated axially to increase the compressibility of the profile core. The prod.is an alternative to the use of a resilient cellular pad, being more durable, less friable, impermeable to sweat or other moisture.
