The installation comprises a horizontal digester tunnel, pref. installed below ground level. Containers of waste can be introduced through an entry in the top of the tunnel at one end. The containers are displaced through the tunnel in single file succession to be extracted at the other end via an exit in the top of the tunnel. The containers are of perforated construction e.g. metal or plastic mesh, and are advanced through the tunnel below a constant level of liq.. The tunnel can provide a closed circuit annular passage with a single opening serving as both entry and exit. The tunnel is simple to install and operate and can be constructed of non-corrodible materials. The conveying trolley and drive mechanism etc. is kept outside the corrosive atmos. in the tunnel.
