Appts. for the assembly of chromatography columns, esp. the convection of a pretreatment column to a conventional chromatography column comprises a multi-position ball valve to which the outlet of the pretreatment column and the inlet of the chromatography column are attached in a leak-free manner. The two columns may then operate in series, may be flushed separately, or a combination of both according to the ball valve position. Used for the automatic assembly of chromatography columns without manual intervention other than the stocking of the machine with columns.
