Antifungal substance known as Bacillomycin F, obtd. by cultivation of a strain of Bacillus subtilis is characterised by the following properties: (1) it is a colourless powder; (2) M.pt. 243 deg.C; (3) Chromatographic characteristics: Rf is 0.47 in 65:25:4 chloroform-methanol-water and 0.63 in 44:6:50 DMF-water-chloroform; (4) Colour reactions give positive reaction with Pauly reagent and rhodamine and a negative reaction with ninhydrin; (5) There is absence of electrophoretic migration at pH 8.0 and pH 4.0; (6) The IR spectra has characteristic bands at 3.0-3.1, 6.1 and 6.5-6.6 microns; (7) The UV spectra in 95% ethanol has two maxima at 203 and 275 microns; and (8) It is soluble in 95% ethanol and insoluble in propylene-glycol. Antifungal active against mildews, yeasts, phytopathogenic fungi and fungal diseases of the skin, mucous membranes, nails, hair etc. (I) may be used in cooling water systems (0.001-10 wt.%). In pharmaceutical compsns. it has low toxicity (at 10mg/kg i.p. in mice no mortality is observed. Activity tests against phytopathogenic fungi are described.
