A planar heating surface is provided with a flat front (2) with decorative relief (3), and a rear surface having integral supports (6) for electric heating elements. The front panel is carried on a steel frame (12) which has interior ducts for hot air passing behind the array of heating elements. The steel frame (12) has provision for attachment of mounting brackets by which the heater unit is fixed to a wall or other vertical surface. Radiant heat is obtained from the face panel (2) and convected heat from the passage of air through the space (4) behind the heated panel. The heated space may be divided into two sections, of which the upper can be maintained at a higher temp.
