The chemical current source with atmospheric oxygen depolarization, consists of a cylindrical housing (1) in which there are a positive electrode and negative electrode, concentric with one another and separated by an ion conducting membrane. A rod shaped current carrier (5) for the negative electrode runs through the centre of the housing (1). Other components consist of a metal cover (6), with air hole (7) and auxiliary hole (8), an hermetically sealed intermediate layer (9) and a tear-off sign (10) in the form of a flat ring. An insulating layer avoids contact of the negative electrode with the positive current-carrying housing (1), and a collar protects the negative electrode from oxygen when the air hole (7) is opened. When the sign (10), which is made of the same material as the intermediate layer (9), is torn off, a hole is formed, through which oxygen reaches the positive electrode, and the cell becomes active. In the sealed condition, the shelf life is considerably extended without loss of capacity.
