Nitroanilines are prepd. by reacting an amine RNH2 or NH3 with 3,4-methylene dioxy nitrobenzene (MDONB) to give prods. of formula (I) or their salts (where R is H, alkyl opt. mono- or polyhydroxylated, alkoxyalkyl, aminoalkyl of formula CH2)-nNR1R2 (III), where R1 and R2 are H, alkyl opt. mono-or polyhydroxylated, and n is 2-4). Also claimed are tinctorial compsns. for keratinic fibres, partic. human hair, contg. (I) (where R is alkyl, CH2CHOHCH3, polyhydroxy, alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aminoalkyl (III)), or a cpd. of formula (II) (where R1 is -CH2CH2OH or CH2CHOH-CH3 and A is -OCH2CH2 or -O-CH(CH3)-CH2-) or their salt. Cpds. of formula (IV) and (V) are also claimed. (where R1 is -CH2.CH2OH or -CH2-CH(OH)CH3 and A is -OCH2CH2 or -O-CH(CH3)-CH2-. The process gives (I) in improved yield and purity and comprises one single step (cf. GB1168105 and 1012793). The cpds. give a glossy yellow shade resistant to weathering and washing.
