Keratin deriv. for cosmetic compsn. - obtd. by acylating hydrolysed keratin followed by oxidn. or redn. of cystine di:sulphide links and S-alkylating
Keratin hydrolysate which is chemically modified after hydrolysis is prepd. by (i) subjecting the starting keratin to acidic or enzymatic hydrolysis so that the hydrolysate has a mol. wt. of 1000-10000; (ii) acylating the hydrolysed keratin by reacting the amino or alcohol gps. of the hydrolysed keratin with an acyl halide of formula RCOX (where X is halogen and R is opt. branched alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl, all opt. substd. and contg. 1-24C; (iii) either oxidising the cystine disulphide links of the prod. to obtain SO3H gps, opt followed by salification of the SO3H, or reducing these links to obtain thiol gps -SH, the reduction being followed by an S-alkylation using an alkylating agent of one of the following formulae (I), (II) or (III) where Y is halogen; R4 is H or 1-4C alkyl; and R5 is -NR6-D-N(+)(R6)3X(-) or -NR6-D-SO2O(-)M(+) D is opt. branched 2-10C alkylene; M(+) is H(+), an alkali metal or Mg cation or N(+)(R2)4, R2 being H, 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl; R6 is H or 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl; X(-) is halide, carboxylate or sulp(on)ate ion who carbon-contg. skeleton consists of upto 10C; and p is 0-5. The keratin hydrolysed chemically modified as above is also claimed. Prod. is used in cosmetic compsns (claimed) for treating skin or hair. Prod. has no harmful effect on hair or skin.
