The two halves of the connector each have sliding pistons which move under the restoring forces of spiral springs. The pistons move in axial bores. The upper piston carries pairs of contacts which press radially against the internal surface of the bores. The end of the upper piston is shaped to fit over the convex cap of the lower piston in such a manner that, under pressure, a liquid-tight seal is formed by gasket rings. Pipes transmit hydraulic pressure to the cylindrical cavities, and cause the downward movement of the upper piston. Fixed contacts, set in an elastic medium, press radially onto the lower piston in the contacts- open position and make electrical contact with the contacts attached to the upper piston. The whole of the internal cavity is filled with an electrically insulating inert liquid which is pressurized to balance the pressure of the external liquid. A membrane transmits the external pressure to the internal liquid.
