A cast stainless steel for use at very low temperatures consists of up to 0.08 wt% carbon, up to 2.0 wt% silicon, up to 2.0 wt% Mn, from 18.0-26.0 wt% Cr, from 5.0-16.0 wt% Ni and from 0.5-5.0 wt% Mo, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities, which alloy composition contains delta ferrite in an amount of from 10-40 vol%. This cast stainless steel possesses superior stability at very low temperatures, thus rendering it particularly suitable for casting into components such as valves, pumps, compressors, containers and piping and for use in LNG plants. The steel also possesses good corrosion resistance, in particular pitting corrosion resistance.
