PURPOSE:To obtain an austenitic stainless steel having superior resistance to intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking by reducing the amount of C in a steel and adding a prescribed amount of Mo. CONSTITUTION:The composition of an austenitic stainless steel is composed of, by weight, 0.5-4% B, 0.03% C, 2% Si, 4% Mn, 16-19% Cr, 8-15% Ni, 0.05-0.4% Al, 1-3% Mo and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. The resistance of the steel to intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking is further improved by adding 0.1-1% one or more among Ti, Nb, Tr, Zr, V and W besides said elements.
