PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst capable of removing oxygen in high efficiency and with long life, as the catalyst for removing oxygen, by supporting on a heat resistant ceramic fiber carrier impregnated with silica a ferrous metal, oxide of a rare earth element and a platinum group metal. CONSTITUTION:As a catalyst for removing oxygen in a mixed gas consisting essentially of hydrogen, a carrier comprising heat resistant ceramic fiber impreanated with silica is allowed to support a ferrous metal such as nickel or cobalt, oxide of a rare earth element such as lanthanum oxide or cerium oxide and a platinum group metal such as rhodium or platinum. The resulting catalyst has resistance and sulfur resistance as well as extremely high oxygen removing efficiency and long life.
