PURPOSE:To enable simple and quick quantitative determination of the chlorine in an org. solvent by using a specific selected reagent. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol soln. of alkaline earth metallic salt of iodine or ammonium iodide is allowed to exist and the free iodine is quantitatively determined in the case of determining quantitatively the chlorine in an org. solvent. Measurement is possible in the uniform phase of the org. solvent according to such method and therefore the corrosion of the device arises hardly and there is no need for separating the aqueous phase. Generation of scale in a flow passage is suppressed as well. The method is therefore easily adaptable to a continuous automatic analyzing method particularly in the process for producing the org. solvent. The chlorine in the org. solvent often coexists generally with hydrogen chloride, ferric chloride, etc. but even if such coexisting materials exist therein, the quantitative determination is accomplished without affecting the quantitative determination value of the chlorine.
