PURPOSE:To quantitatively determine dodecanoic acid simply without performing extraction operation by separating phenancyldodecanoic acid from a (TBP- dodecane) org. solvent prepared by diluting tributyl phosphate with n-dodecane and measuring the ultraviolet absorption thereof. CONSTITUTION:A TBP-dodecane org. solvent and phenancyl bromide are mixed to form phenancyldodecanoic acid which is, in turn, separated from the org. solvent by a high speed liquid chromatography using a column packed with octadecyl group coupled silica as a fixed phase and a mixed solvent of ethanol and methanol as a moving phase. The absorbancy in a near ultraviolet region of phenancyldodecanoic acid in the mixed solvent after separation is measured. By this method, dodecanoic acid in the org. solvent can be quantitatively determined simply without being preliminarily extracted into an aq. phase.
