The toy building block (1) has permanently magnetic elements (3) arranged to provide self-locating engagement with similar blocks. One or more such elements may be arranged on one face (2) of the block, whilst the opposite face (5) has a plate (6) of ferro-magnetic material which may cover the entire face. - Alternatively, magnetic elements on both sides or each element may extend over the full height of the block or most of its height. Each element may form or may be arranged in a projection in one face and a complementary recess in the opposite face to provide positive location between adjoining blocks.
