The gear transmission comprises a pinion (11) meshing with teeth (13) which project from the plane of a gear wheel having its axis at right angles to that of the pinion. Each tooth is rotatable about an axis parallel to the wheel axis and radially slidable relative to that axis such that the teeth form a tooth rack in the area where they mesh with the pinion. - Each tooth may be radially slidably carried in a bush rotatable in the wheel, whilst their movements are controlled via a projection on each tooth following a suitably contoured groove (14) in a fixed cam ring (16). The wheel may carry a number of tooth assemblies on different radii engageable by sliding the pinion in the direction of its axis to provide selectable gear ratios.
