The rotary cylindrical valve e.g. for reciprocating internal combustion engines is tangential to the cylinder head. The valve rotates inside a jacket. - The combustion products either pass through a passage in a solid valve to a second outlet or the centre of the valve is hollow, to allow gases to escape along its axis. The valve communicates with the combustion chamber above the piston via the opening.
