In known apparatus of this type, the time required for filling and emptying the impregnation cylinder is quite considerable, so that, apart from the variation in absorption due to the material, further variation in absorption results from the impregnating process itself. In the apparatus according to the invention, the cross-section of the connecting line (d) between the impregnation vessel (JG) and the supply vessel (VG) arranged above it is dimensioned in such a way that a period of only 6 minutes, preferably 4 minutes, is sufficient to completely fill the impregnation vessel.
