Electrolysis cell with cathodes in metal particles and catholyte flow - has anodes in downwardly closed diaphragm tubes with anolyte outlets and contg. downwardly open anolyte supply tubes
The electrolysis cell (3-5) comprises cathodes (1) in a space (2) contg. a bed of metal particles (e.g. Cu or Zn) and anodes (10 or 26) surrounded by diaphragm tubes (8). The space (2) has inlet (6) and outlet (7) connections for catholytic and the tubes have inlet (21 or 28, 26 or 31) and outlet (22 etc.) connections for anolyte. The tubes (8) are closed (23 or 29 or 30) at their lower ends and the supply of anolyte to the anode spaces (9) is via downwardly open tubes (21 or 26 or 31) arranged within the diaphragm tubes. The anolyte supply may be via a tubular anode (26) or via an internal second diaphragm tube (31) concentrically arranged within the tube (8) and consisting of the same or different material as the tube (8).
