Prodn. of hydrocarbon mixts. from an oil residue comprises (a) separating the oil residue into a low-asphalt fraction and an asphalt rich fraction; (b) subjecting the low asphalt hydrocarbon fraction to cracking to form hydrocarbon distillates; (c) partially combusting the asphalt-rich hydrocarbon fraction with O2-contg. gas to form a gas mixt. contg. CO and H2; (d) subjecting at least part of the CO and H2 contg. gas mixt. to catalytic hydrocarbon synthesis to form synthetic hydrocarbons and (e) mixing at least part of the synthetic hydrocarbons with at least part of the hydrocarbon distillates from (b).
