Each egg (5) is moved along on a conveyor belt (1) between rollers (2), by a chain drive wheel (3). They pass over a light source box (18), allowing tje operator to identify any cracked, bloody or otherwise unsuitable eggs using a hand-held electronic tool (21). The associated memory ensures that any identified egg is removed from the end of the conveyor after it is passed along by a rotary mill device. A trap-door element (7) is withdrawn from a reciprocating carrier plate (13) and the defective egg drops into a waste bucket (12). Eggs passing inspection are individually weighed (16) and pass onto automatic sorting and packing machinery.
