To reduce the tendency to oxidation of shaped carbon articles such as electrodes, in particular anodes, especially those intended for aluminium electrolysis furna ces, in particular those containing vanadium as a natural contaminant, the carbon-based starting material is doped in the comminuted state with an oxidation inhibitor. For this purpose, the comminuted starting material is treated with a solution of at least one chemical compound, in particular of the elements Ba, Ga, Sn, Sb, Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, individually or as a plurality, advantageously in combination with chemical compounds of metalloids, for example, of boron or of phosphorus.
