Method for gaining access to a site in a blood vessel so as to perform a medical operation comprises (1), momentarily occlusion of the vessel and introducing into it, upstream of the site, a moveable device for blocking the circulation; (2) introducing downstream of this device a physiologically compatible liq. (I) from an outside source, contg. enough O2 to maintain tissue viability downstream of the device during occlusion; (3) then positioning the device required for the operation near the site. - Pref. (I) is an aq. perfluorocarbon emulsion and the medical operation is carried out with a fibre for transmitting laser light and during the operation a clear flush fluid is introduced into the blood vessel. - The operation being performed may be visual examination, recovery of biopsy samples, treatment of an obstruction or deposit in the vessel, (e.g. by treatment with laser light) or introduction of drugs. The method avoids damage to downstream tissue caused by oxygen depletion.(0/5)
