Vinyl sulphone crosslinking agent for hydrophilic colloids - prepd. e.g. from chloroethyl sulphonyl propionyl chloride and diamine

Novel vinylsulphones are of formula (I) CH2=CHSO2 CH2 CH2 (CONH)x(CH2)3 -2 O(CH2 CH2 O -y where x is 1 or 2 and y is 0 or 1-100. In pref. cpds. y is 0-40 or y is 0-10 partic. 1-4. (I) are crosslinking agents for hydrophilic colloids contg. aminogenic, imino and /OH gps. partic. PVA and gelatine (deriv) in the form of photographic layers. (I) are resistant to hydrolysis in aqs. solns. do not discolour gelatine, impart good spreading props to gelatine solns. and have good hardening characteristics over a wide range of pH. (I) can also be used as crosslinking agent in the plastics, leather, textile and paper industry.
