(co)polymerisation of conjugated aliphatic di:olefin(s) - to predominantly 1,4-cis polymers, with catalysts contg. lanthanide complexes, Lewis acids and aluminium cpds.
The novel catalyst system comprises (A) an Al cpd. (a) RA1XY (where R is H or 1-20C hydrocarbon group, X is H, halogen, alkoxy, thioalkoxy, amino; Y is H, 1-20C hydrocarbon group, or halogen, providing that if X and Y are both halogen, R is H); or (b) a cpd. having polymeric nature of formula: (where R' is 1-20C hydrocarbon group and n = no. of repetitive units); (B) a Lewis acid contg. =1 halogen; (C) a cpd. of a metal of the Lanthanide series, having an Atomic No. of 57-71, of formula ML3 (where M is lanthanide, L is monovalent, mono-branched ligand of formula X'R" p where X' is O, N, S or P; R" is 1-20C hydrocarbon group; p = a no. equal to the valency of X' reduced to a single unit). Used for the (co)polymerisation of diolefins, e.g. 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, isoprene, etc., to obtain high mol. wt. polymers with ahihg 1,4-cis unit content. With butadiene, polymers contg. 99% 1,4-cis structure are obtd.
