Continuous hot strip rolling process is achieved by, before or during the final hot rolling stage inserting an agent between the overlapping ends of two strips in sequence which will react with the scale to form a low m.pt. cpd., welding the overlapping ends by reduction in the mill, after opt. tacking temporarily with nails, and then passing the continuous strip through the final hot rolling stage. The 'dead' time usually arising out of waiting for the exit of the previous strip before rolling the second is eliminated. The weld between the sheets is sufficiently strong for rolling under strip tension.
