Melt fed down from a trough 11 through one or more nozzles 12, into a region where it is moulded by electromagnetic force for solidification, is directed outwardly by a submerged dish 4 of a float device 1, in generally radial horizontal directions, in the same direction as the eddy flow at the surface of the poured melt. The dish 4 is secured by struts (e.g. four) to the bottom of a (sintered silica) float 2 on the melt surface. The device 1 is shown loosely attached for floating, by arms 6 on the annular float 2, to pins 13 on two slotted members connected by screws 15 on a beam 8 which can be raised or lowered by screws or, as shown, by levers 18 of cam mechanisms 9, 10, to determine the melt level. The level of beam 8 determines the lowest level of the dish 4 and the level of the melt trough 11 whose outflow through the nozzle(s) 12 is controlled by the dish. IMAGE
