Filter element consists of filamentous components attached to the end of a pipe. These are formed into a sphere to create a random array of surfaces with spaces between them through which the fluid being filtered passes. The filtrate runs off down the pipe. The elements are made from a dimensionally rigid material such as glass or metal. The surfaces attract and hold solids suspended in the fluid. In this way a cake does not build up and the pressure drop across the element does not increase as filtration proceeds. The device is used for filtering fluids, and provides a different concept of pliable filtration with no change in flow characteristics, no matter what state the element is in. This is achieved by sepg. the particles in flow passages of greater dimension than the particle dimension. It also gives high capacity for prolonged periods.
