Process for the direct preparation of compounds of mercury by roasting chlorinating cinnabar

The process consists of (a) mixing a cinnabar concentrate obtd. by flotation with a metal chloride with decompsn. pt. below the decompsn. temp. of cinnabar; (b) heating the mixt. to 400-450 deg. C in a current of air; and (c) sepg. the mercury chlorides from the mixts. by washing and decantation to obtain a sludge of insol. mercurous chloride.
