ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREHighly absorbent low density fibrous struc-tures such as webs or batts formed from mixturesof powdered or microcrystalline hydrogel pre-parations with surfactant treated filler materialshaving a particle size equal to or greater thanthe hydrogel particle size. Absorbent materialsof the invention exhibit good wicking propertiesand result in more efficient use of hydrogels byminimizing gel blocking. Additional improvementsinclude reduced dusting, improved stabilizationand somewhat higher absorbency when compared withhydrogel materials alone. Uses for these materialsinclude, by way of example and not limitation,disposable diapers, incontinent pads, sanitarynapkins, wipes, surgical sponges and the like.
