METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TIME DOMAIN COMPRESSIONAND SYNTHESIS OF UNVOICED AUDIBLE SIGNALSABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURECompression and synthesis techniques and relatedapparatus for time domain signals, particularly signalswhose information content resides in the power spectrum suchas speech and more particularly signals whose amplitude isaperiodic, such as unvoiced speech sounds. Compressiontechniques include eliminating serially redundant segmentsof information. Synthesis, particularly of unvoiced soundswhich are sensitive to injected artificial periodicity,involves repeating sequentially portions of the same segmentrepresentative of the source signal, including commencingand terminating at different points each repetition, varyingthe length of the portion and reproducing the portionforwards and backwards in time. The invention finds appli-cation in speech compression and compact speech synthesisdevices.
