ABSTRACTA method and apparatus for treating ground and groundwater contaminated with hydrocarbon and halogenated hydrocarboncompounds. Treatment of contaminated water removed from theground is accomplished by microorganisms which consume thecontaminants. Growth of microorganisms is enhanced undercontrolled conditions by addition of nutrients and gasessuch as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or a combination ofthese and other gases to the contaminated water. Treatedwater carrying microorganisms, nutrients and gases is returnedfor recirculation through the contaminated area of ground toleach out and biodegrade the contaminants deposited in theground. Microorganism activity is also enhanced in theground by injection of nutrients and oxygen or ether gasesinto the ground and ground water in the contaminated area.
