ABSTRACTA PROCESS FOR CONVERTING COAL AND/OR HEAVY PETROLEUMFRACTIONS INTO HYDROGEN OR AMMONIA SYNTHESIS GAS.Hydrogen or ammonia synthesis gas consistingsubstantially only of hydrogen and nitrogen is preparedfrom coal and/or heavy petroleum fractions by gasificationwith steam and an oxygen-containing gas, cooling the thus-formed crude gas by quenching and/or steam production,scrubbing the cooled gas to remove soot and other solidimpurities, re-heating by heat exchange with exit gas froma subsequent conversion step, shift-converting the re-heated,soot-free crude gas to convert its CO by passing the gasthrough one ore more catalyst beds of one or more sulfur-resistant shift catalysts, removing acid gases (notablyH2S and CO2) from the shift-converted gas and finallysubjecting the gas to a catalytic methanation to convertremaining amount of carbon oxides to methane. If the processis used for preparing ammonia syngas, the gasification isconveniently carried out with oxygen-enriched air and steam.
