Both Fluid and Delayed coking are used to produce synthetic crude oil from Athabasca bitumen. A key characteristic of thermal-coking processes is the formation of a solid coke phase from the liquid bitumen feed. A detailed understanding of the phase behavior prior to solid coke formation has yet to be fully developed. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that affect the ultimate yield of coke and to attempt to include observations of the phase behavior of coke and coke-precursor material into the overall mechanism of coke formation.
