A b s t r a c t.Coal is continuously fed into an extruder and reacts thereinat elevated pressure and temperature and possibly in the presenceof a catalyst with hydrogen and/or hydrogen containing compoundsadded to the contents of the extruder on at least one spot situatedat a distance of at least three times the inner diameter of the ex-truder in front of the end of the screw. From the reaction productleaving the extruder hydrocarbons which are fluid under normal con-ditions are separated.Part of these hydrocarbons which are liquid under normal con-ditions may be recycled to the extruder.
