Material comprises (1) at least one hydrated inorganic salt(I) having a phase change transition temp. in a range greater than 0-140 deg. C., the (I) undergoing segregation of its chemical components during repeated cycles of freezing and thawing, and (2) a surface active thickening agent(II) in the form of a cationic surfactant used in an amt. sufficient to form a micelle structure throughout the storage material to prevent the segregation. Specifically chaimed cpds. (II) are oleyl methyl, bis(2-hydroxyethyl-octadecylamine) and C20H41(CH3) 2N(+)CH2CH2OHBr(-). Typical materials (I) are CaBr26H2O, MgCl2.6H2O, a mixt. of 38.5 wt.% CaCl2.6H2O and 61.5 wt.% CaBr2.6H2O, a mixt. of 58.7 wt.% Mg(NO3).6H2O and 41.3 wt.% MgCl2.6H2O, etc.
