Process for obtaining metallised or highly reflective surfaces employing an aqueous varnish

A process for covering a substrate is disclosed. The coating is a member of the group consisting of a specular metallic coating and of a highly brilliant coating. This process comprises a) a part of at least the substrate or the transfer agent is covered with a layer of aqueous varnish, b) the substrate and the transfer agent are laminated together before the varnish is dry, c) the varnish is dried, and d) the transfer agent is separated from the substrate. This metallic or highly reflective film gives the substrate the appearance of a metallic or highly reflective surface. The transfer agent can be reused in subsequent operations. The coating and laminating stages may be performed simultaneously.
