A cigarette making machine in which cigarette lengths incorporating filter tips are fed towards adhesive coated cut pieces of wrapping paper which are rolled around them, has a cutting blade which is pushed against the tensioned moving paper to cut it into lengths, a spring loaded rod carrying a tensioning roller which held against the paper. On start up, a contact passes a signal to a pulse shaper feeding a storage device followed by an amplifier which actuates an electromagnet so that a spring loaded rod is forced downwards to press a tensioning roller aginst the paper following the cutter blade. At the same time, a pulse device connected with the storage device operates with the cigarette and filter length feed system so as to bring the filter paper into contact with the adhesive applicator roller and bring the paper feed roller immediately after the tensioning roller into contact with a pair of pinch rollers so that the paper feed is brought into action.
