A process is claimed for monitoring and controlling the partial oxidn. of an ash-contg. fuel in a gasifier of the type in which the reaction chamber is surrounded by cooling surfaces in the form of one or more parallel tubes through which liq. H2O (pref. pressurised) is circulated. The process comprises (a) measuring he amt. (W) of H2O supplied to =1 tube section per unit time, (b) measuring the H2O temp. (T) at several (=2) points along the tube, and (c) multiplying W by the difference in T (DELTA T) between 2 points along the tube. The product W DELTA T is used as a measure of the ave. temp. in the section of the reaction chamber between the temp. measurement points and/or for controlling the process (esp. by adjusting the O2 and fuel supply rates) and/or for actuating an emergency shutdown system. The process provides rapid response to variations in reaction temp. and produces a signal (W DELTA T) which is highly sensitive to variations in process conditions (esp. molten slag temp.).
