The electron beam passes through axial holes in a screen and a collector electrode(I) before reaching the workpiece. Sec. electrons (i.e. back-scattered electrons) are collected by electrode(I), which is connected to one input terminal of a comparator. The power supply which feeds the electron gun also supplies a signal to a second input terminal on the comparator. The difference between the two input signals is used to provide a comparator output signal, which is employed for automatic deflection of the beam so the latter remains on the seam or joint being welded. Used in welding all types of metals or alloys, to obtain high quality welds.
