Drawing mechanism for presses having a mechanically driven drawing ram (24) and a blank holder (5) whose holding force acting on the blank (27) oppositely to the drawing direction is exerted via a pressure plate (7) with the aid of a drawing cushion piston (10) which supports said pressure plate and is loaded by pressure medium and which is disposed in a stationary drawing cushion cylinder (12), characterized in that a piston (9) having an operative surface adapted to be loaded in the drawing direction is fastened on the pressure plate (7), and that a control means (22, 23) is provided which works in dependence on the travel of the ram and by which the blank holder (5), before the drawing ram (24) contacts it, is adapted to be accelerated into a movement in the drawing direction through the loading of the operative surface with pressure medium.
