Electrical ignition system for a spark-ignition internal combustion engine

An ignition system of this kind comprises an ignition coil, a circuit arrangement which opens and closes the circuit which comprises the primary winding of the ignition coil and, if appropriate, a distributor device for supplying voltage to a plurality of spark plugs of the engine. In order to be able to ignite in a particularly reliable fashion for example a lean mixture of fuel at the lower rpm range of the engine, the circuit arrangement produces, whilst the circuit is open or during an analogous time period, a pulse sequence which is in dependent of the rpm of the engine and has fixed time intervals for supplying the primary winding of the ignition coils such that, during the respective ignition process at the spark plug in question, an ignition spark which is present during the entire period of the time or time period mentioned is provided at least at the lower rpm range of the engine.
