A method of acoustically detecting bubbles in a medium from the attenuation of soundwaves is largely interference-free and independent of other parameters. The medium (2) is induced to vibrate by white noise or by means of selected frequencies from a vibration transducer (5). The resonance spectrum produced, which contains one or more resonance lines whose amplitude is essentially dependent only on the bubble content of the medium (2), is picked up by an acceleration transducer (7). The amplitudes of the bubble-sensitive resonance lines are monitored and indicate the bubble content of the medium. The sound transducers (5, 7) used are preferably magnetostrictive vibrators mounted on the outside of the structure (1) containing the medium (2). The invention makes it possible to monitor a liquid, in particular a coolant in a reactor circuit, for the presence of bubbles. IMAGE
