The internal combustion engine (2) functioning according to the proposed method has a main combustion chamber (4) and an ignition chamber (7), which is supplied with operating mixture from the main combustion chamber solely by way of at least one injection duct (15, 16) for the production of at least one ignition flame, by means of which the operating mixture in the main combustion chamber is fired. The cross section of at least one of the ignition flames can be varied by means of a rotary slide valve (17). For this purpose an adjusting element (19), which is exposed to combustion gases, acts on the rotary slide valve (17). From idling up to high loads of the internal combustion engine the temperature of the adjusting element (19) increases. As a result the total ignition flame cross section is increased so that ignition flames beyond this enlarged total ignition flame cross section are accelerated less than when idling. Consequently the combustion pressure in the main combustion chamber (4) of the internal combustion engine (2) increases both when idling and at low and high load at an advantageous rate. IMAGE
