A damping device (1) for a valve (2) is used to damp unwanted vibrations as can occur, for example, on mechanical transmission means of a mechanically actuable valve (2). The device comprises a damping chamber (8) in which a piston (12) connected to an actuating device for the valve (2) can be moved counter to the resistance of a damping fluid. An adjustable restrictor (18), the cross-section of which is capable of decreasing as the temperature of the damping fluid rises, is used to equalise the viscosity behaviour of the damping fluid as a function of temperature fluctuations in such a way that a virtually constant damping behaviour of the device is achieved.
