The invention relates to a novel process for the formaldehyde-free crosslinking of casein finishes in leather finishing. The process is one in which the crosslinking of the casein is carried out with the aid of hexamethylolmelamine hexamethyl ether in the presence of formic acid and/or of a complex of tartaric acid and boric acid as a catalyst.
