An automatic plant for the assembly and welding of sheet-metal constructions, in particular body shells (S) of vehicles, is described which has a work station (10) arranged in the course of a production line. During the production, the work station has interchangeable side frames (14) which are each allocated to certain types or models and have positioning, holding and clamping devices (30) for the individual sheet-metal parts. In addition, each side frame (14) is provided with automatic welding fixtures (29) as well as their actuating, control and supply devices (Q, 31) which are attached via plug-in and coupling devices (32 to 37) to allocated feed devices when the respective side frame (14) is put into its working position in the work station (10). A welding transformer (31) can be provided for supplying the welding fixtures (29), and in addition each side frame can have a coolant circuit and a pressure-medium circuit for the actuating devices.
