In a sloping-bed lathe, a cutting-to-length and centring device (15, 15') are arranged in its work space, preferably on the headstock, on the one hand, and on the tailstock (10) on the other. Provided on each of the two components there is a slide (16), which bears a head (17) for cutting to length and centring. The workpieces are gripped by means of poppets (19, 19'), of which likewise preferably one is mounted on the headstock (2) and the other on the tailstock (10), on clamping guides (20, 20').
