The invention relates to a simple, low-cost and rapid process for obtaining superoxide dismutase of extremely high purity from red blood cells from vertebrates, especially mammals, preferably large animals, wherein, in the first stage of the process, haemolysed red blood corpuscles are heated without any further addition of chemicals, and in the second stage of the process after removal of the precipitate by chromatography of the resulting solution the superoxide dismutase is isolated.
