The invention relates to sintered materials for machining or tribological stress. The aim of the invention is to develop sintered materials based on titanium compounds, which are suitable for combining, and/or surpassing in special fields of application, the cutting properties of sintered material and cutting ceramics in machining and which also display a high wear resistance under tribological stress. The invention was based on the object of improving the properties of the known sintered materials based on titanium carbide, titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride and to widen their field of application. According to the invention, this object is achieved when the materials consist of a base composition of a titanium compound (TiC, TiN or TiCN) forming the sintered material base, oxygen (O) and one or more metals (M) such as copper, manganese, iron, nickel and/or cobalt, and of remaining phases of the integral base composition (Ti, O, M).
